Meet your crew at the clubhouse or mobile trailer 20 minutes before departure to sign waivers and store valuables in lockboxes.
Strap on a high-buoyancy life vest and grab an aluminum or fiberglass paddle matched to your height and reach.
Guides run through stroke basics, bracing against low rollers, capsize recovery, and whistle signals on dry land.
Slide your kayak into the shorebreak with a guide holding your bow, then punch through the small shore wash into clear water.
Cruise 3 to 5 kilometers along coastal kelp beds, pausing periodically for seal sightings and photos against the mountain.
Catch a gentle runner back toward the slipway, rinse your feet in fresh water, and collect digital photos from the guide team.
Cape Town looks different from the water line. When you launch a sea kayak from the slipway at Three Anchor Bay or the sheltered jetty at Simon's Town, Table Mountain rises straight behind you without the traffic noise of Atlantic seaboard roads. You paddle past granite boulders, thick sea bamboo forests, and deep ocean swells that break against the western shelf.
Paddlers of every skill level get out here, from first-timers trying an easy ocean outing to experienced folks booking a kayak adventure around Cape Point. Local outfits like Atlantic Outlook run guided outings out of the Waterfront and Granger Bay, while Cape Kayak Adventures and Truth Kayaking work the sheltered waters between Sea Point and Clifton. False Bay on the Indian Ocean side offers warmer, calmer conditions where you can paddle alongside African penguins right off Boulders Beach.
Water activities in Cape Town depend entirely on the wind. The summer south-easter can pick up suddenly, turning an easy morning paddle into hard work. Going out with certified ocean guides keeps things safe, with sit-on-top sea kayaks that stay buoyant even if a rogue wave rolls over the bow.
Paddled out of Three Anchor Bay at 07:00. We had four dusky dolphins circle under our kayaks for 15 minutes while the sun lit up Signal Hill.
The guides at Simon's Town were calm, patient, and made getting through the small waves easy. Seeing penguins swim under my paddle was unreal.
Atlantic water is definitely cold so dress for splashes. Our arms were tired after 90 minutes of paddling, but the harbor seals made every stroke worthwhile.
Very well organized trip. The briefing was clear, gear was clean, and we got sent 30 crisp photos after the trip at no extra charge.

Most trips run between R450 and R550 per person for an outing of about 90 to 120 minutes. That fee covers your boat, life jacket, paddle, and safety guide. Private bookings or specialized kayak adventures Waterfront operators offer can cost slightly more.
No prior experience is necessary. Operators use broad sit-on-top sea kayaks that are very hard to flip. Guides teach you the basic paddle strokes and turning techniques on the shore before you push off into the water.
Safety is the final word on the water. If winds top 15 to 18 knots or the swell builds past safe limits, operators reschedule your outing for a calmer morning or provide a prompt refund.
Wear quick-drying boardshorts, a rash vest or synthetic tee, and slip-on neoprene booties or bare feet. Bring a windbreaker in case the air feels cool. You will get wet from paddle drip, so avoid heavy cotton and denim.
Independent kayak rental in Cape Town is rare along the open Atlantic seaboard because of unpredictable offshore winds and strong rip currents. A few rental outfits operate on sheltered inland waterways like Zandvlei or the Waterfront canals, but coastal ocean paddling almost always requires a guide.
Simon's Town sits on False Bay, which has warmer water, less swell, and the famous African penguins. Sea Point sits on the wild Atlantic side, offering bigger scenery, kelp forests, and frequent dolphin sightings. Both are well worth doing.
Leave expensive phones on land unless you have a waterproof neck pouch. Eyeglasses should be secured with a floating strap. Guides carry waterproof cameras and take photos throughout the trip, which they usually email to you afterward.
Book your morning slot on the water to beat the Cape breeze and watch local marine life from sea level.
